Survey reveals Americans' deep concerns over Trump's leadership
Donald Trump is considered a "dangerous dictator" by many Americans. According to research conducted by the Public Religion Research Institute (PRRI), as many as 52% of U.S. citizens hold this belief. Four out of ten Americans view Trump positively.
Donald Trump has been in office for over 100 days in the U.S. His actions, both at home and in international relations, could be described as revolutionary. The latter is significant from our perspective—Trump aims to achieve peace in Ukraine but does so while attempting to maintain quite good relations with the aggressor, Vladimir Putin. Moreover, he imposed high tariffs on many countries, including the entire European Union. These have been suspended for now, but the whole world is uncertain about what other ideas the U.S. president might come up with.
This is especially true since he changed the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the American Gulf, has repeatedly expressed interest in acquiring Greenland or the Panama Canal, and recently demanded free passage through the Suez Canal.
Survey from the USA: How Americans assess Trump
Trump is also waging a "war" with the U.S. establishment, publicly attacking journalists, institutions, and universities. The U.S. president is periodically evaluated. Surveys indicate the mood among Americans after more than 100 days of Trump's administration. Axios published the results of a survey conducted by the Public Religion Research Institute (PRRI).
The survey reveals that as many as 52% of respondents agreed with the provocative statement that Trump "is a dangerous dictator whose power should be limited before he destroys American democracy." Among independent voters, this percentage was 56%. Only four out of ten U.S. citizens expressed positive opinions about Trump after his first 100 days in office.
Decisions regarding mass deportations, tariffs, and the cancellation of student visas cause the most significant dissatisfaction among Americans. The American public also negatively assesses the mass layoffs of federal workers in many agencies and the inhumane treatment of detainees being deported.
They assessed Trump: "Threat to democracy"
Among those who view Trump positively, the majority are Republican Party voters—83% of them. Additionally, 8% of Democratic supporters also appreciated the U.S. president. Eighty-one per cent of surveyed Republicans still believe that "Trump is a strong leader who should be granted the authority needed to restore America's greatness."
Melissa Deckman, CEO of PRRI, expressed in a conversation with Axios that many Americans view Trump as having authoritarian tendencies and believe that the nation's democratic system may be at risk.
The above study was conducted from February 28 to March 20 on a sample of over 5,000 people from all 50 states in the U.S.
