Tensions escalate as Rubio condemns Dodik's destabilising actions
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio sharply criticised Milorad Dodik for actions threatening the stability of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio expressed concern over the actions of Milorad Dodik, President of Republika Srpska, which he believes threaten the stability of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
The actions of Republika Srpska President Milorad Dodik are undermining Bosnia and Herzegovina's institutions and threatening its security and stability. Our nation encourages political leaders in Bosnia and Herzegovina to engage in constructive and responsible dialogue. We call on our partners in the region to join us in pushing back against this dangerous and destabilizing behaviour" - wrote Rubio on platform X.
Earlier, Ann Wagner, a member of the US House of Representatives, warned about Dodik, calling him a "criminal." "His reckless actions are a dangerous escalation and flagrant dismissal of the judicial process" - emphasised Wagner.
Conflict in Bosnia and Herzegovina
Tensions in Bosnia and Herzegovina rose following a decision by the court in Sarajevo on 26 February, sentencing Dodik to one year in prison and imposing a six-year ban from holding public office. The verdict was related to obstructing the decisions of the High Representative of the International Community, Christian Schmidt. Dodik has the right to appeal.
The Parliament of Republika Srpska passed laws prohibiting the operation of central judicial and prosecutorial institutions within its territory. A "foreign agents" law was also enacted. All these documents were signed by Dodik, but their enforcement was suspended by the Constitutional Court of BiH.
The EUFOR mission announced plans to increase its contingent in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Although the exact number of additional soldiers was not disclosed, local media report about 400 troops from several EU countries.
Political ambitions of Dodik
Before the US presidential elections, Dodik, who is under American sanctions, hoped for Donald Trump's victory, which was supposed to pave the way for Republika Srpska's declaration of independence. After the elections, he organised a reception in Banja Luka, expressing hope for better relations with the US.
- I believe that his victory means that as Republika Srpska, we will have a greater chance of reaching decision-making centres to pursue our interests - said Dodik.
