Tesla's used car surge: Elon Musk's political impact unraveled
The number of used Teslas in the American market rose by 33% in 2025, according to current data, reports Business Insider. Experts attribute this situation to the political activities of Elon Musk, the owner of Tesla.
According to Autotrader data, the number of used Teslas increased from 8,500 at the start of 2025 to 11,515 by mid-March.
Experts indicate that Elon Musk's actions affect Tesla's image, and the increase in the number of used Teslas may result from greater product availability. However, the prices of used Teslas are dropping, which may discourage owners from selling. The average price of a used Tesla is currently $10,000 (€9,100) lower than other electric cars.
Tesla crisis
Tesla's deliveries in the first quarter of 2025 fell more than expected, resulting in the worst performance since 2022. The company delivered 336,681 cars, which is significantly below analysts' forecasts and also lower than the figure from the first quarter of 2024, reports the Financial Times.
Tesla's troubles may be due to several factors. Elon Musk, who is involved with the policies of American President Donald Trump, has also commented on European political issues, which may have affected Tesla's image in that region, notes the Financial Times. Additionally, delays in updating the Model Y, one of Tesla's key vehicles, also negatively impacted sales results.
On Saturday, opponents of billionaire Elon Musk's actions within President Donald Trump's administration once again gathered in front of Tesla showrooms in the United States and some European cities, hoping their protest would cause a further decline in car sales produced by his company.
In previous demonstrations, some participants committed acts of vandalism, setting Tesla cars on fire, which U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi condemned as an act of domestic terrorism.
