As a result of the Israeli attack on the school building in Gaza, at least 25 people were killed, and dozens were injured. This building was a shelter for displaced people from other parts of the Gaza Strip. Women and children were among the victims.
Mohammad Al-Kasih, head of Hamas police investigative services in the northern part of the Gaza Strip, was killed in the attack, along with his wife and children. The school housed hundreds of people displaced from the town of Beit Lahia, where there are ongoing battles with the Israeli army.
Why is Israel conducting military operations in Gaza?
Israel intensified its military operations in the Gaza Strip at the beginning of May, aiming to eliminate Hamas's military potential and free hostages. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced that Israel would control the entire Gaza Strip, currently controlling about 77 per cent of the area.
Israel launched its military campaign in the Strip in response to a Hamas attack on 7 October 2023, which resulted in approximately 1,200 people being killed and 251 being abducted to the Strip. The Palestinian health ministry reports that in the 19-month Israeli offensive, more than 53,000 Palestinians have died. However, the ministry does not specify what portion of the victims are Hamas fighters.
