This coming week, a discussion between U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian leader Vladimir Putin is expected. Steve Witkoff, the special U.S. envoy for the Middle East, provided this information during a Sunday interview with CNN. Witkoff emphasised that talks will also be held with representatives from Ukraine.

After meeting with Putin, Witkoff noted that a crucial topic of the discussions will be the status of the four Ukrainian regions occupied by Russia. "I expect that there will be a call with both presidents this week, and we’re also continuing to engage and have a conversation with the Ukrainians," said Witkoff.

During his visit to Moscow, Witkoff described the conversation with Putin as factual and "solution-based." He noted that the positions of both sides are now closer than ever before. He added that the status of the four occupied and annexed regions by Russia will hold crucial importance in the negotiations.

Uncertainty about recognition of territorial gains

Although the talks with Putin were constructive, Witkoff declined to answer whether the U.S. acknowledges Russian territorial gains. This remains one of the most significant points of contention in the negotiations.

The talks between Trump and Putin, as well as further consultations with Ukraine, could be pivotal for the future of the region. All participants in the negotiations are aware of the importance of these talks and their potential impact on stability in Eastern Europe.
