Trump congratulates Canada's Carney, plans White House visit
The President of the United States, Donald Trump, said on Wednesday that he had congratulated Canada's Liberal Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, on his election victory and announced that Trudeau would visit the White House "within the week". According to Trump, the Liberals' victory in the elections did not indicate Canadians' dislike for him. He stated that the Conservative leader "hates him more."
What do you need to know?
- Donald Trump congratulated Mark Carney on winning the election in Canada and announced that Carney would visit the White House within a week.
- Trump stated that Carney hates him less than the Conservative leader, Pierre Poilievre.
- The Liberal party won the elections in Canada, despite earlier forecasts suggesting an advantage for the Conservatives.
Why will Carney visit the White House?
Trump commented on the Liberals' victory in Monday's elections in Canada during a meeting with his Cabinet at the White House. In response to suggestions that the Liberals' victory was a result of his statements about annexing Canada, the US President stated that "they both hate Trump, and the one who hates him less won."
Trump remarked that he believes the Conservative politician Pierre Poilievre harbours stronger animosity toward him than the individual representing the Liberal side.
What are Trump's relations with Canadian politicians?
Trump said that he had a conversation with the Canadian Prime Minister on Tuesday, and Carney "couldn't have been nicer".
Trump noted that the message was somewhat unclear but described the individual as a courteous gentleman, adding that he is expected to visit the White House within the coming week or possibly even sooner.
Carney and the ruling Liberals won Monday's elections, although earlier in the year they were trailing by as much as 20 percentage points in the polls against Poilievre's Conservatives. However, the dynamics changed due to, among other things, tariffs imposed by Trump and his statements about wanting to annexe Canada to the USA.
Poilievre was previously compared in style to Trump, although like Carney and former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, he criticised the statements of the American President.
