Trump denies manipulation claims amid Ukraine peace talks
Donald Trump assures that no one is manipulating him in the negotiations to end the war in Ukraine. Secretary of State Marco Rubio suggested that the USA might withdraw from attempts to achieve peace if no new signals emerge.
During Friday's press conference at the White House, President Donald Trump addressed a journalist's question about whether Russia is "playing him" in talks concerning the end of the war in Ukraine. Trump strongly denied this, emphasising that his goal is to help end the conflict.

"Nobody is playing me' in peace talks," said Trump, who emphasised that he is "trying to help" and wants to bring about peace in the East.
Earlier, Secretary of State Marco Rubio suggested that the United States might give up attempts to achieve peace between Ukraine and Russia if no signs appear soon that it is possible. Rubio stressed that the USA must determine whether peace is achievable within a few weeks. If not, the country will have to focus on other priorities.
Trump agreed with Rubio's statement, adding that the war in Ukraine claims human lives daily, and those who do not strive to end it are "horrible." However, the President did not disclose how much time the USA is giving itself to decide on further involvement in the peace process.
Trump's election promises
During the 2024 election campaign, Trump promised to end the war in Ukraine within 24 hours of taking office. However, after the election, his position became less categorical.
Keith Kellogg, a special envoy for peace in Ukraine, announced that the new President plans to end the conflict within 100 days of the inauguration on 20 January. On the day of the inauguration, Trump emphasised that he intends to end the war "as soon as possible".
Putin announced the "Easter truce"
While the US Secretary of State threatened to withdraw from peace talks regarding the war in Ukraine, on Saturday, Vladimir Putin announced an "Easter truce." According to the Kremlin leader's words, it was to be in effect from Saturday to Monday.
Russia announced the suspension of military actions, expecting a similar step from Ukraine. However, Ukrainian authorities emphasised that Russian drones were still operating over their territory, which undermined Moscow's intentions.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky criticised the truce proposal, pointing to the lack of sincerity on Russia's part. In his opinion, Putin's actions were an attempt to manipulate public opinion, not a genuine pursuit of peace. Zelensky stressed that Ukraine is ready for talks, but expects real actions, not just declarations.
In the international context, the Easter truce met with mixed reactions. Some experts indicate that it is part of a larger Russian strategy aimed at gaining an advantage in negotiations. Meanwhile, Ukraine, supported by Western partners, continues defensive actions, emphasising the need for a lasting and unconditional ceasefire.
