Trump insists on U.S. control of Greenland for security reasons
"We need Greenland for international safety and security. We need it. We have to have it," said President Donald Trump of the United States on Wednesday.
President Trump expressed his belief that Greenland is crucial to both the national and international security of the United States. During a ceremony announcing tariffs on foreign cars, he asserted that Denmark should permit the USA to take control of the island.
- We need Greenland for international safety and security. We need it. We have to have it. I hate to put it that way, but we're going to have to have it - said Donald Trump.

Why is Greenland so important?
Trump emphasised that the presence of the USA in Greenland is essential considering the activity of ships from China and Russia in the region.
- We have to have that land, because it's not possible to properly defend a large section of this Earth, not just the United States, without it - added the president.
These statements were made in the context of the planned visit by Vice President J.D. Vance to the island, who is to assess the security situation.
Vance's visit, scheduled for Friday at 12:00 GMT, includes visiting the space forces base. In an earlier Wednesday interview with conservative columnist Vince Cogliano, Trump stated that Vance's mission will be to convey to the Greenlanders that America "needs the island" and "has to have it".
The visit of a broader delegation, which aimed to tour heritage sites, was cancelled due to opposition from local and Danish authorities.
