Trump lambasts Le Pen conviction as a political 'Witch Hunt'

Donald Trump once again spoke out about Marine Le Pen. He emphasised that he doesn't know her personally but appreciates how hard she has worked for many years. "Now, just before what would be a Big Victory, they get her on a minor charge that she probably knew nothing about — Sounds like a ‘bookkeeping’ error to me," wrote Trump.

What do you need to know?

  • Marine Le Pen was convicted by a court in Paris for embezzling public funds. The verdict concerns the fictitious employment of MEP assistants from 2004 to 2016.
  • Donald Trump criticised the verdict, calling it a "witch hunt" and an example of "lawfare". He emphasised that the charges are minor and resemble an accounting error.
  • Marine Le Pen plans to appeal, claiming she is innocent and intends to continue her political activities despite the verdict.

Donald Trump defends Marine Le Pen again

Donald Trump once again commented on the verdict in the case of French politician Marine Le Pen. "The Witch Hunt against Marine Le Pen is another example of European Leftists using Lawfare to silence Free Speech, and censor their Political Opponent, this time going so far as to put that Opponent in prison," reads Trump's post.

The former President of the United States stated that "it is the same ‘playbook’ that was used against me by a group of Lunatics and Losers, like Norm Eisen, Andrew Weissmann, and Lisa Monaco." "They spent the last nine years thinking of nothing else, and they FAILED, because the People of the United States realised that they were only Corrupt Lawyers and Politicians," Trump continued.

"I don’t know Marine Le Pen, but do appreciate how hard she worked for so many years. She suffered losses, but kept on going, and now, just before what would be a Big Victory, they get her on a minor charge that she probably knew nothing about — Sounds like a ‘bookkeeping’ error to me. It is all so bad for France, and the Great French People, no matter what side they are on. FREE MARINE LE PEN!" he concluded.

This is Trump's second statement regarding Le Pen. Earlier, Trump described Marine Le Pen's conviction as a very serious matter. He pointed out that excluding her from participating in elections reminds him of his own legal troubles in the United States.

Marine Le Pen convicted. She cannot run in elections

Marine Le Pen was convicted for embezzling public funds. A court in Paris ruled that the far-right leader and other politicians in her party were involved in the fictitious employment of MEP assistants from 2004 to 2016. Le Pen, who has run for president three times, will not be able to run in the 2027 elections unless a higher court rules in her favour.

Marine Le Pen assures that the verdict does not mean her withdrawal from politics. In an interview with TF1 television, she stated that she will always support the French who trust her. "I am going to appeal because I am innocent," she emphasised. Le Pen believes that the court's decision is a "denial of democracy" and intends to continue her political activities.
