Trump lashes out at bishop over migrant and LGBTQ plea
Donald Trump sharply criticised Bishop Mariann Budde for her comments during Tuesday's service at the National Cathedral in Washington. Budde drew attention to the need to protect migrants and LGBTQ people, sparking a stir online. The President of the USA clearly did not appreciate her remarks.
President Donald Trump called Washington Bishop Mariann Budde "malicious" after she condemned his plans for deporting illegal immigrants and limiting the rights of LGBTQ people.
Trump described her as a "representative of the radical left" and a "staunch opponent" of his policies.
- The so-called bishop is radically left-wing, a staunch opponent of my policies. She had a malicious tone and was neither convincing nor wise. In the USA, we are facing a gigantic wave of crime. Despite her inappropriate statements, the service was very dull and uninspiring. She is not very good at her job! She and her Church owe society an apology! - Trump wrote on Truth Social.

During Tuesday's sermon at the National Cathedral in Washington, Budde appealed to Trump for mercy towards immigrants and sexual minorities.
- In the name of our God, sir, I ask you for mercy. There are people in our country who are afraid. Gays, lesbians, transgender children are in both democratic and republican families - emphasised Budde.
The bishop also urged Trump to show compassion for illegal immigrants, noting that they perform low-skilled jobs and services in the United States.
In a later interview with CNN, Budde said that the groups she mentioned "are our neighbours and have been portrayed in the harshest light throughout the political campaign."
- I wanted to emphasise, as gently as I could, what the place of these people is in our community - explained Budde.
