Trump's elusive peace: 100 days in office amid ongoing conflict

Donald Trump, nearly 100 days after resuming the office of President of the USA, faces criticism for his approach to the Russian-Ukrainian conflict. Despite promises of a swift end to the war, Russian aggression in Ukraine continues.

Donald Trump, after taking office as President of the USA, pledged to quickly resolve the war in Ukraine. However, after 100 days of his presidency, the conflict persists, and Russia continues to attack Ukrainian cities. Trump assures that he does not favour any side, and his goal is to end the bloodshed.

During his election campaign, Trump repeatedly stated that he would end the war within 24 hours of taking office. However, after winning the election in 2024, his promises became less ambitious. On Inauguration Day, 20th January, Trump stated that he intends to end the conflict as soon as possible.

The American peace proposal, revealed by the media, includes a provision recognising Russian sovereignty over Crimea. The President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, rejected this possibility, emphasising that it would be contrary to the Ukrainian constitution. Trump, however, stated that "Crimea will remain with Russia," which he believes is crucial for peace negotiations.

Relations with Russia

According to CNN, Trump, although publicly criticising Russia for its attacks on Ukraine, admits in private conversations that reaching an agreement is more challenging than he expected. He points to the mutual animosity between the presidents of Russia and Ukraine as the main obstacle in the negotiations.

Signals of satisfaction with Trump's presidency are emerging from Moscow. Sergey Lavrov, Russia’s Foreign Minister, in an interview with CBS, stated that Trump recognises the need to address the fundamental causes of the war. Meanwhile, a Pew Research survey indicates that 43% of respondents think Trump favours Russia.
