Donald Trump announced the closure of visitor centres in national parks throughout the USA, which has been greatly criticised. The National Park Traveler portal highlights that such closures of active points and offices, resulting in job cuts, could have irreversible effects.

Trump's controversial decision

"The federal government exists to serve the people, not abandon them. But President Donald Trump and Elon Musk are destroying our country, cutting jobs, slashing necessary funds, and creating widespread chaos and economic devastation," stated Congressman Jared Huffman in a controversial comment. He published a list of tourism-related institutions marked for closure by Donald Trump's administration.

Jared Huffman warns that this decision could lead to economic chaos and appeals to the Trump administration to reconsider.

Impact on local communities

Theresa Pierno, President of the National Parks Conservation Association, calls for blocking the closures, which include park offices, visitor centres, and artifact warehouses, before the damage becomes irreversible.

According to USA Today, about one thousand National Park Service employees have already been laid off. Although park employees and their supporters argue that such places are already understaffed, Trump administration officials emphasise that the reductions fulfil the President’s promise that taxpayer money will be spent wisely.
