The Turkish Civil Aviation Authority is imposing fines on passengers who stand up before the seatbelt sign is turned off. New regulations have been introduced following numerous complaints from travellers.
What do you need to know?
- The Turkish Civil Aviation Authority will impose fines on passengers who stand up before the seatbelt sign is turned off.
- The fines amount to approximately £50.
- The regulations were introduced in response to passenger complaints. They reported that other travellers stand up and block the aisles before the plane stops.
The Turkish Civil Aviation Authority has decided to introduce fines for passengers who do not follow safety rules after landing. This refers to individuals who unbuckle their seatbelts and stand up before the icon indicating that they should remain seated is turned off. Airlines have recently observed a "significant increase" in such situations, much to the dissatisfaction of other passengers.
These new rules apply to all airlines operating flights to Turkey, including the national carrier Turkish Airlines.
The regulations aim to enhance onboard safety because, in the event of a sudden stop, passengers may fall, and luggage may fall out of the overhead compartments. This can lead to passenger injuries and result in crowded aisles, which must remain clear for potential evacuation.
Fines for non-compliance with regulations
Passengers who do not comply with the new guidelines may face fines of approximately €58.50. Airlines are obligated to inform passengers about the necessity to fasten seat belts and remain seated until the signal is turned off. In cases of rule violations, airlines are required to report such incidents to the relevant authority.
