U.S. and UK forces test missile systems in Baltic drill
On Gotland, a strategically located island in the Baltic Sea, US and British troops are conducting defence exercises. For the first time, the HIMARS and MLRS missile systems have been tested there.
Gotland, situated between Stockholm and the Baltic countries, plays a crucial role in ensuring security in the Baltic Sea. Exercise commander Johan Hellborg emphasised that control over the island allows for overseeing maritime navigation and airspace in the region.
On Tuesday evening, British paratroopers conducted an airdrop north of Visby airport, securing the landing of American aircraft equipped with long-range rocket launchers.
This scenario was considered "very realistic" in the context of a potential conflict. In case of a threat, the Swedish military is responsible for logistics and welcoming NATO allies.
Troops exercise as part of Swift Response
Exercises on Gotland are part of the extensive Swift Response 25 manoeuvres, which take place from 11 to 31 May in the Baltic Sea and the Far North. Previously, in May, simulations of a hospital evacuation on Gotland were conducted in Vaestervik.
As early as January 2022, before the Russian invasion of Ukraine, Sweden increased its military presence on Gotland. In 2024, civil defence exercises were held there with the participation of key officials, including Anna Breman from the Swedish Bank.
