The tragic incident occurred in November during an attack by Russian forces on Ukrainian positions in the area of the village of Petriivka in eastern Ukraine. Five Ukrainian soldiers were hiding in a private house.
After the building was surrounded by Russian soldiers, the Ukrainian defenders were forced to come out unarmed and lie on the ground.
"Violating international humanitarian law, the occupiers shot Ukrainian prisoners with automatic weapons," stated the Prosecutor General's Office of Ukraine.
The prosecutor's office reminded everyone that such actions violate the Geneva Conventions and qualify as an international crime. The investigation aims to hold the perpetrators accountable.
In October, the prosecutor's office reported a similar incident in the same part of the front, where Russian soldiers executed six Ukrainian soldiers who had also surrendered.
