Ukraine proposes ceasefire with Russia or face new sanctions

The President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, announced that, together with the countries forming the "coalition of the willing," he proposed to Russia a demand for a full and unconditional cessation of hostilities starting on Monday, 12th May. Should Moscow refuse, severe sanctions would be applied targeting the Russian energy and banking sectors.

During a conference on Saturday following a meeting with European leaders, Zelensky emphasised the significance of this initiative. The Ukrainian president called the event a "very important signal" from the leaders of France, the United Kingdom, Germany, and Poland. The Ukrainian president described the meeting with the leaders of France, the UK, Germany, and Poland as a powerful demonstration of European solidarity with Ukraine. He emphasized that their united stance supports the pursuit of genuine peace and the strengthening of long-term regional security, following his discussions with Prime Minister Donald Tusk, President Emmanuel Macron, Chancellor Friedrich Merz, and Prime Minister Keir Starmer.

The proposed ceasefire would last for a minimum of 30 days and cover all spheres of warfare - in the air, at sea, and on land. Zelensky noted that the initiative also has the support of the United States, highlighting its international character and importance.

Consequences for Russia in case of refusal

The President of Ukraine clearly outlined how a potential rejection of the proposal by the Russian side would be interpreted. According to Zelensky, attempts by Russia to set its own conditions or a complete refusal to accept the truce would be a clear indication that the Kremlin does not want peace and intends to continue the war. Such a stance by Moscow would trigger a sanctions mechanism targeting key sectors of the Russian economy.

In the event that Russia does not agree to a complete cessation of hostilities, the Ukrainian position is that sanctions must be enforced, with a particular focus on ramping up restrictions targeting its energy industry and financial institutions. This proposal serves as an attempt to exert pressure on Russia by combining a diplomatic peace initiative with the threat of serious economic consequences should it be rejected.
