The Ukrainian Bars missile was unveiled by Minister Herman Smetanin on 11 April. Although specific technical details remain undisclosed, it is known to be a product of private manufacturers rather than state-owned factories. The missile is classified as a "missile-drone," meaning it combines both missile and drone characteristics. The BBC has acquired details about the specifications of this secretive weapon.

New capabilities for Ukrainian defence

Bars has a range of about 700 to 800 kilometres, classifying it as a medium-range weapon. Its principal advantage is the capacity for mass production within Ukraine, enabling regular strikes on targets deep inside Russia. This advanced solution may be challenging for missile defence systems to intercept.

The BBC reminds us that in 2024, Ukraine significantly increased missile production by introducing new models like "Pekło," "Palianycia," and "Ruta." Each has distinctive features, but "Bars" is notable for its mass-production capability and extended range. This could greatly enhance Ukraine's defensive capabilities.

According to available information, Bars is positioned between a traditional cruise missile and a drone. BBC findings indicate the new weapon has a warhead weighing 50 to 100 kilograms and is powered by a small turbojet engine. This enables it to swiftly reach its intended target and makes it a difficult target for enemy air defences. Bars can be launched from both ground platforms and aircraft.

Development of the Ukrainian defence industry

The BBC also notes that in August 2024, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky ordered additional funding for missile development. Consequently, Ukraine is undertaking several projects aimed at enhancing the country's defensive and offensive capabilities, including the modernisation of the Neptune missile and new models suitable for both attacks and reconnaissance.
