Ukraine war losses reach critical point, says ambassador

The former Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, and now the Ambassador of Ukraine to the United Kingdom, Valerii Zaluzhnyi, stated that the number of losses in the Ukrainian army at this stage of the war with Russia has reached a "critical point."

During a speech at the School of Public Management of the Ukrainian Catholic University, Zaluzhnyi said that Ukraine has lost 50,000 soldiers in the war with Russia, with another 300,000 having been wounded.

This contrasts with the data provided by the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky. "As regards our people, the exact numbers are very important for us: 45,100 people are dead, and we have around 390,000 cases of people being wounded," Zelensky stated in early February.

"Calculate what 50,000 out of 5.5 million people who were registered are. The result is zero, because this is a critical point. Which, I think, we are unlikely to cross. At the same time, the war has changed under the influence of two factors. The first is demography. Let me draw your attention to this: 50,000 killed in Ukraine and more than 300,000 wounded," Gen. Zaluzhnyi calculated.

According to the former commander-in-chief, Russia has also sustained significant losses. Even though it has a more favourable demographic situation, "for them, the critical threshold is at least 250,000 dead."

"This does not mean they can't go out and round up (men – ed.) to send them to the front. They can. They can even march them to the front in perfect formation—because this is tyranny. They can do that. But whether they will actually fight is another question," Zaluzhnyi added.
