A blocked drain is a common problem in many homes. Accumulated hair, soap scum, or grease can seriously hinder water flow, leading to unpleasant odours and potential malfunctions. Before reaching for chemical products or calling in a professional, it's worth trying some proven home remedies.

Use a cable tie

On TikTok, the channel “flawia.dom.” showcased a home trick. One of the simplest and most effective ways to unclog a drain is to use a plastic cable tie. Simply cut small hooks along its edge and gently insert it into the drain. Moving it up and down will allow the hooks to catch onto hair and other debris blocking the water flow. After a few movements, you can pull out the cable tie along with the accumulated residue.

Alternative home methods

If you don't have a cable tie to hand, there are other home methods to unblock a drain. One is using a mixture of baking soda and vinegar. Pour a few tablespoons of baking soda into the drain, then add a cup of vinegar. Leave it for about 15 minutes to let the substances react, then rinse the drain with hot water. This method effectively dissolves deposits and neutralises unpleasant odours.

Another method is to use a rubber plunger. It works by creating pressure that helps push debris out of the pipes. To increase effectiveness, ensure the area around the drain is tightly sealed and perform vigorous movements, creating a vacuum that ejects the blocking elements.
