US warns Mexico: Tackle cartels or face military action
The United States has issued a warning to Mexico, threatening military action if the country fails to address its issues with drug cartels.
Pentagon chief Pete Hegseth stated that if Mexico does not tackle the collusion between its government and the drug cartels, the US military is prepared to take unilateral action in this matter.
This information was reported by sources familiar with the details of a phone conversation. As revealed by "The Wall Street Journal," the highest-ranking representatives of the Mexican armed forces who were involved in the conversation were shocked and outraged, interpreting his words as a suggestion of a potential US military intervention on Mexican soil.
The US Department of Defense declined to comment on the situation.
More troops on the border with Mexico
On Friday, US military sources reported that approximately 1,100 soldiers will additionally be deployed to the border with Mexico.
This is yet another measure by President Donald Trump's administration, which is utilising the military to support the implementation of the pre-election programme aimed at combating illegal migration, as media outlets have highlighted.
Units from Kentucky, North Carolina, and Virginia will be dispatched to the Mexican border. This will increase the number of active-duty soldiers on the border to nearly 4,200.
