Venice introduces tourist reservation system to manage crowds
This year, tourists visiting Venice without an overnight stay are required to register their visit and pay a fee for a total of 54 days. The city authorities have recently launched a platform for booking visits and paying these fees.
Venice, one of the most popular tourist destinations not only in Europe but also globally, is implementing a new system for booking visits and collecting fees from tourists. From the 18th of April to the 4th of May, and on other selected days in May, June, and July, day-trippers must register their visit and pay the necessary fee.
New reservation and fee system
The authorities in Venice, aiming to facilitate tourists' visits, have launched a website (cda.ve.it) where one can make reservations and pay the fee. It is €5 if the reservation is made at least four days prior to arrival. For later registration, the cost doubles to €10.
Registration and the fee are mandatory for tourists visiting Venice from 8:30 PM to 4:00 PM local time. This system is intended to regulate the flow of tourists and manage their visits, thereby balancing the needs of both visitors and city residents.
Days of mandatory registration
This year, registration is required for 54 days, during which the highest tourist influx is anticipated. Besides the period from the 18th of April to the 4th of May, these days include the 9th-11th, 16th-18th, 23rd-25th, and 30th-31st of May; the 1st-2nd, 6th-8th, 13th-15th, 20th-22nd, and 27th-29th of June; and the 4th-6th, 11th-13th, 18th-20th, and 25th-27th of July.
The Venetian authorities stress that the aim of introducing this unique system, on a global scale, is to curb the number of tourists making short visits without overnight stays in Venice and to better manage their arrival. The website features a link for travellers that allows exemption from the fee if they have proof of an overnight stay in Venice.
