Why rooibos tea is the caffeine-free choice for your health
Many people can't imagine a day without a cup of hot coffee. However, instead of brewing another cup of black coffee, consider opting for a healthy tea. You'll soon notice the benefits.
My colleague usually sits at her desk with a cup of rooibos tea. At first, everyone viewed her choice with scepticism when she stopped queuing at the coffee machine. However, after she explained her reasons and later mentioned that she had to replace half her wardrobe, a tin of rooibos found a permanent place in my kitchen.
What is rooibos tea?
Rooibos is actually not a true tea but an herbal infusion made from the fermented leaves of the Aspalathus linearis shrub. It grows in a specific mountainous region in the Western Cape Province of South Africa. Rooibos has a naturally sweet, slightly nutty, earthy flavour and a reddish hue. Some people detect notes of vanilla or honey in it. Unlike tea and coffee, it does not contain caffeine, so it can be enjoyed even late in the evening.
Properties of rooibos tea
It's not just about the taste. Rooibos is a drink rich in antioxidants, which protect against the effects of free radicals. Therefore, they help protect against disease processes, maintain youthful skin, and slow down the body's ageing process. The infusion also supports the immune system and improves digestion. Compared to black and green tea, rooibos has a lower content of tannins, compounds that can interfere with the absorption of some nutrients, such as iron.
It also contains quercetin, which helps lower LDL cholesterol levels, known as "bad cholesterol". This supports heart health and reduces the risk of atherosclerosis.
Rooibos tea for weight loss
Rooibos tea is also a natural aid in the weight loss process. Of course, it isn't a miracle weight-loss solution but it can support a healthy lifestyle. As long as you don't add sugar or honey, it has no calories. Thanks to aspalathin (an antioxidant), it can help regulate blood sugar levels. It contains no caffeine, making it an ideal drink for those looking to reduce their caffeine intake.
Rooibos has a calming effect on the nerves, which can help reduce stress and curb the temptation for unhealthy snacks. It contains compounds that support the digestive system, aiding digestion and speeding up the removal of toxins from the body. Although the liver and kidneys are the main organs responsible for removing toxins, supporting their function with antioxidants can enhance the effect. Its diuretic properties will help eliminate retained water, promoting a feeling of lightness.
How to brew rooibos?
Brewing rooibos is simple. Just pour boiling water over the dried leaves and steep for 5-6 minutes to avoid a bitter taste. You can drink it hot or cold, with a touch of honey or lemon to enhance its flavour. Typically, 1-2 teaspoons of rooibos leaves are used for one cup (about 200–250 millilitres), but the strength can be adjusted to suit individual preferences.
