The statement from the President of Ukraine appeared on the Telegram and X platform. Zelensky expects Russia to confirm the ceasefire.

"It is a positive sign that the Russians have finally begun to consider ending the war. The entire world has been waiting for this for a very long time. And the very first step in truly ending any war is a ceasefire," wrote Volodymyr Zelensky.

"There is no point in continuing the killing even for a single day. We expect Russia to confirm a ceasefire – full, lasting, and reliable – starting tomorrow, May 12th, and Ukraine is ready to meet," he conveyed.

Putin's statement

Zelensky's message is a response to Putin's statement, which emerged overnight from Saturday to Sunday. Vladimir Putin suggested direct talks with Kyiv in Istanbul.

The Russian leader announced that negotiations could take place on 15th May, highlighting the role of Turkish President Recep Erdogan in the peace efforts.

Putin also acknowledged the efforts of the new US administration towards achieving peace in Ukraine. "I would like to once again express my gratitude for the mediation services and efforts aimed at a peaceful resolution of the Ukrainian crisis, made by our international partners, including China, Brazil, countries of Africa, the Middle East, and recently the new administration of the United States of America," he said.
