Embracing rooibos: The caffeine-free revolution in your mug
Many people can't imagine a day without a cup of hot coffee. However, instead of brewing another cup of black coffee, consider trying a healthy tea. You'll quickly notice the benefits.
My colleague usually spends her time at her desk with a cup of rooibos tea. Initially, everyone was skeptical when she stopped lining up at the coffee machine. However, after she explained her reasons and later mentioned having to replace half her wardrobe, the tin of tea found a permanent spot in my kitchen.
What is rooibos tea?
Rooibos is actually not a tea but an herbal infusion from fermented leaves of the Aspalathus linearis shrub. It grows in the southern part of Africa, specifically in a mountainous region of the Western Cape Province. It has a naturally sweet, slightly nutty, earthy flavour and a reddish colour. Some people notice notes of vanilla or honey in it. Unlike tea and coffee, it does not contain caffeine, so it can be enjoyed even late in the evening.
Properties of rooibos tea
It's not just about the flavour. Rooibos is rich in antioxidants, which protect against the effects of free radicals. Therefore, they help protect against disease processes, maintain youthful skin, and counteract the body's aging process. The infusion also supports the immune system and improves digestion. Compared to black and green tea, rooibos has a lower content of tannins, which are compounds that can interfere with the absorption of some nutrients, such as iron.
It also contains quercetin, which helps lower LDL cholesterol levels, known as "bad cholesterol," supporting heart health and reducing the risk of atherosclerosis.
Rooibos tea for weight loss
Rooibos tea is also a natural aid in the weight loss process. Of course, it is not a miraculous weight loss solution, but it can support a healthy lifestyle. As long as you don't add sugar or honey, it has no calories. Thanks to aspalathin (an antioxidant), it can help regulate blood sugar levels. It contains no caffeine, making it an ideal drink for those looking to reduce their caffeine intake.
It has a calming effect on the nerves, which can help reduce stress and curb unhealthy snacking. It contains compounds that aid the digestive system, regulating digestion and speeding up the removal of toxins from the body. Although the liver and kidneys are the main organs responsible for removing toxins, supporting their function by providing antioxidants can enhance the effect. Diuretic properties will help eliminate accumulated water, promoting a feeling of lightness.
How to brew rooibos?
Preparing rooibos is simple. Just pour boiling water over the dried leaves and steep for 5-6 minutes to ensure the infusion isn't too bitter. You can drink it hot or cold, with the addition of honey or lemon to enhance the flavour. Typically, 1-2 teaspoons of rooibos leaves are used for one cup (about 250 ml), but the strength can be adjusted according to personal preferences.
