During a visit by European diplomats to the refugee camp in Jenin on the West Bank, Israeli soldiers opened fire. The shots were intended to intimidate the delegation, which was there to observe the challenging living conditions of the residents. Fortunately, no injuries were reported.

Why did Israel shoot at the refugee camp?

The Israel Defense Forces explained that the warning shots were fired when the delegation strayed from the predetermined route. The military expressed regret for the "inconvenience" and announced an investigation into the matter. The soldiers will personally contact the diplomats to explain the situation.

The incident received a strong international response. The EU's head of diplomacy, Kaja Kallas, emphasized that any threat to the lives of diplomats is unacceptable. Italy and France summoned the Israeli ambassadors, demanding explanations.

Jenin - a place of intense Israeli military activity

Jenin, located in the northern part of the West Bank, has been a centre of intense Israeli military activity for months. The military operations aim to combat terrorist groups that have gained strength following the Hamas attack on Israel in October 2023.

Since the beginning of operations in Jenin, the Israeli military has killed over 100 terrorists and detained more than 320 wanted individuals. These military actions have resulted in the displacement of approximately 40,000 Palestinians and the destruction of hundreds of buildings.

The increase in terrorist activity on the West Bank, supported by Iran, has resulted in the deaths of over 60 Israelis. In response, the Israeli military has killed more than 930 Palestinians.
