Cleaning the washing machine filter is not just about appearance but primarily about the appliance's functionality. Neglecting this component can lead to serious problems, such as reduced water pressure, which in turn affects washing efficiency or causes water to fail to drain from the machine. A dirty filter can also result in unpleasant odours that seep into clothes.

Regularly cleaning the filter primarily ensures the proper functioning of the washing machine, leading to better-quality laundry. Additionally, removing dirt from the filter prevents the buildup of mould and bacteria, which is especially important for people with allergies.

How to clean the washing machine filter?

Preparing to clean the washing machine filter doesn't require specialized tools. All you need is a screwdriver, old towels, a bowl, and vinegar. The filter is usually located at the bottom of the washing machine behind a small flap. To remove it, pry open the flap with a screwdriver and gently unscrew the filter. Remember to unplug the washing machine before you start cleaning the filter.

Before unscrewing and removing the filter from the washing machine, gently pull out the hose next to it. Place the end of the hose in the bowl and remove the plug. This will allow the accumulated water to be drained.

When unscrewing the filter, it's best to place towels underneath to absorb the remaining water. After removing the filter, remove any debris, such as hair or fabric remnants. Then, soak the filter in warm water with vinegar or baking soda for about 30 minutes. After this time, dry it thoroughly and put it back in place.

In addition to cleaning the filter, it's best to take care of the entire washing machine. Vinegar and baking soda are excellent agents for removing limescale and deposits. Simply pour 120 mL of baking soda into the drum and 240 mL of vinegar into the detergent drawer, then run the washing machine empty at the highest temperature setting.

Regularly using these home methods not only keeps the washing machine clean but also prevents unpleasant odours from forming. This way, the machine will serve you reliably for many years.
