Russia's new ground forces chief signals broader ambitions
Gen. Andrey Mordvichev has been appointed the new Russian Ground Forces commander. A video has surfaced online in which he clearly states that the war in Ukraine is just the beginning. Mordvichev is responsible for the destruction of Mariupol.
The main commander of the Russian Ground Forces has changed position. Gen. Oleg Salugov's successor is Gen. Andrey Mordvichev, a 49-year-old military officer and former commander of the Central Military District.
Media reports that his career is developing very quickly due to the recapture of Mariupol. Mordvichev was in command of the units that captured and essentially razed the city. Ukrainians are pursuing the new Russian commander for war crimes. Andrey Mordvichev is allegedly responsible for orders to kill civilians and destroy infrastructure.
It is said that the Russian commander mastered the tactics of so-called "meat assaults," which contributed to the capture of Avdiivka. This method of combat is ruthless to soldiers and involves a massive infantry strike. Human losses do not matter—the only goal is to push defenders from their positions. The Russians use their numerical advantage to capture additional territories.
The Russians have a new commander. His words are chilling
Nexta recalled one of the conversations in which Gen. Mordvichev participated some time ago. Two years ago, the Russian military officer implied that "Ukraine is just an intermediate stage" and "this is just the beginning." He believes there is no stopping until Russia's goals are achieved.
Let's remember that even Vladimir Putin, when discussing peace talks regarding Ukraine, emphasizes the "original causes" that must be addressed. And these are very clear — Russia wants a subjugated Ukraine, which it intends to Russify. It also wants to influence Central and Eastern European countries. The Kremlin is also considering restoring economic ties with the western part of Europe, for instance, through selling raw materials. Of course, Russia also aims to push the U.S. out of the eastern flank. Many experts agree that this is how Putin's intentions should be interpreted. It can't be clearer.
