What do you need to know?

  • Marco Rubio warns that Syria may soon face a full-scale civil war.
  • Escalation of conflict in Syria is a result of rising tensions and lack of agreement between parties.
  • Impact on the region: a potential civil war could have far-reaching consequences for the Middle East.

What are the causes of the escalation of the conflict in Syria?

Rubio expressed his concerns about the situation in Syria. According to him, the country may be just weeks away from the outbreak of a full-scale civil war. Rubio emphasizes that rising tensions and a lack of effective diplomatic actions could lead to an escalation of the conflict.

"It is our assessment that, frankly, the transitional authority, given the challenges they’re facing, are maybe weeks — not many months — away from potential collapse and a full-scale civil war of epic proportions, basically the country splitting up," said Rubio during a Senate hearing.

The Secretary of State's words came a few days after his meeting with Syrian leaders.

He emphasized the importance of supporting the current government, explaining that the alternative—a full-scale civil war and ensuing chaos—would inevitably destabilize the entire region.

What does a full-scale civil war mean for the region?

The escalation of the conflict in Syria could have serious consequences for the entire Middle East. A potential civil war could affect the stability of neighbouring countries and increase the number of refugees seeking shelter outside Syria's borders. Rubio emphasizes that the international community must take action to prevent further deterioration of the situation.
