Tragedy at sea: Rescue efforts after Red Sea tourist boat sinks
As reported by RMF FM, a ship carrying tourists sank in the Red Sea off the coast of Egypt. There were 45 people on board. A rescue operation is underway.
According to the BBC, the 44-metre Sea Story ship's SOS signal was received at 11:30 PM Eastern Time on Saturday. The ship was setting off on a diving trip from a port near Marsa Alam.
There were 31 tourists and 14 crew members on board. The governor of Egypt's Red Sea province informed us that 16 people have already been rescued.
The ship sank in an area with many sharks
Some of the survivors found in the Wadi el-Gemal area, south of Marsa Alam, were transported by planes to receive medical assistance, while the others were waiting to be picked up by an Egyptian warship.
Air and sea units continue the search for the missing, he added.
The "Sea Story" ship sank near Shaab Satayah, famous for its beautiful coral reef, in a place where "sharks are plentiful."
