Trump's strategy missteps: Pressuring Ukraine, overlooking Russia

According to experts from the American Institute for the Study of War (ISW), the Trump administration is making a mistake by exerting constant pressure on Ukraine while at the same time having no public expectations of Russia. Analysts believe this strategy significantly hampers reaching an acceptable agreement to Ukraine, Europe, and even the USA.

"The Trump administration has been applying considerable pressure on Ukraine, whose leaders continue to offer concessions and publicly declare their interest in achieving a lasting end to the war. These Trump administration policies are undermining the leverage that the United States needs to get Russian President Vladimir Putin to accept any peace agreement that is in the interests of the United States, Ukraine, and Europe," writes ISW in its analysis.

Experts remind us that Vladimir Putin has not proposed any significant concessions from Russia. Moreover, Kremlin officials persist in making unreasonable demands for Ukraine's total capitulation and NATO's withdrawal from Eastern Europe.

US decisions impact Ukraine

"US policies suspending military aid and intelligence sharing to Ukraine reduce the leverage US President Donald Trump's needs to achieve his stated policy objective of bringing about an end to the war in Ukraine on acceptable terms, a task that requires increasing pressure on Russia, not Ukraine," concludes ISW.
