Trump's unresolved promises: Ukraine war lingers after 100 days
Donald Trump, nearly 100 days after resuming the office of President of the USA, faces criticism for his approach to the Russia-Ukraine conflict. Despite promises of a quick end to the war, Russian aggression in Ukraine continues.
After taking office as President of the USA, Trump pledged to swiftly end the war in Ukraine. However, 100 days into his presidency, the conflict persists, with Russia continuing its attacks on Ukrainian cities. Trump insists he does not favour any side and stresses that his goal is to end the bloodshed.
During his election campaign, Trump repeatedly declared that he would end the war within 24 hours of taking office. Yet, after winning the elections in 2024, his promises became less ambitious. On Inauguration Day, January 20, Trump stated that he intends to end the conflict as soon as possible.
The American peace proposal, revealed by the media, includes a provision recognizing Russian sovereignty over Crimea. The President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, rejected this possibility, emphasizing that it would contradict the Ukrainian constitution. Trump, however, stated that "Crimea will stay with Russia," which he asserts is crucial for peace negotiations.
Relations with Russia
According to the Polish Press Agency, although Trump publicly criticizes Russia for its attacks on Ukraine, he admits in private conversations that reaching an agreement is more challenging than he expected. He identifies the mutual animosity between the leaders of Russia and Ukraine as the main obstacle in the negotiations.
Signals of satisfaction with Trump's presidency are emerging from Moscow. Sergey Lavrov, Russia ’s Foreign Minister, in an interview with CBS, said that Trump recognizes the need to address the fundamental causes of the war. Meanwhile, a Pew Research survey cited by PAP indicates that 43 per cent of respondents think Trump favours Russia.
