What do you need to know?

  • General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, head of the Uganda People's Defense Forces, has publicly admitted that he is tired of the conflict with the Nuer tribe from South Sudan.
  • Kainerugaba suggested that the Nuer should surrender and offer him a thousand cows to end the attacks.
  • Uganda intervened in South Sudan to protect President Salva Kiir and secure Juba's capital.

The general's expectations

General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, who is often noted for his provocative remarks, posted on his X account on Saturday at 7:00 PM EDT that he no longer wished to engage in conflict with the Nuer and called on Riek Machar to show submission to President Salva Kiir. This underlined Uganda’s backing of South Sudan’s head of state.

What are the consequences of Uganda's intervention?

Uganda, led by General Kainerugaba, entered South Sudan to protect President Salva Kiir and secure Juba's capital. The general threatened that any move against the president would be considered a declaration of war against Uganda. “As of 2 days ago, our Special Forces units entered Juba to secure it”, wrote Kainerugaba.

Is this the first time Uganda has entered South Sudan?

Uganda had previously intervened in South Sudan when a civil war broke out between the Nuer and Dinka tribes in December 2013. At that time, the Ugandan Armed Forces arrived to protect the international airport in Juba and ensure the evacuation of Ugandans. However, the UPDF got involved in fighting with the rebels and was accused of using cluster bombs.
