Beware the banana: Potential risks of overindulgence revealed

Excess is never advisable. However, in the case of bananas, which are among the most popular fruits in the world, it's easy to overdo it. Consuming more than 2-3 bananas a day can cause side effects.

Reasonable consumption of bananas can bring many benefits to the body. However, sensitive individuals may react poorly to a large amount of fibre or potassium. Green bananas also contain more resistant starch, which can cause digestive issues. On the other hand, excessive consumption of very ripe bananas causes a significant increase in blood sugar levels.

Allergic reaction, bloating, and gas

For some people, bananas can cause an allergic reaction, manifested by a rash or swelling in the mouth and throat area. Such symptoms are rare, but sensitive individuals should be cautious.

Reactions from the digestive system are more common, especially after eating a large number of unripe bananas. The resistant starch in green bananas is not digested by the body and therefore reaches the large intestine. In healthy adults, it can have positive effects, such as helping to remove harmful substances lingering in the intestines. However, in sensitive individuals, it can cause stomach pains, bloating, and gas.

Meanwhile, due to their high sugar content and soluble fibre, very ripe bananas can cause diarrhoea. Small children, whose digestive systems are not yet fully developed, are more prone to such symptoms.

Who should be cautious about eating many bananas?

Although potassium digestion problems typically appear only after consuming dozens of bananas a day, people with kidney failure may experience side effects after eating just a few. Excessive potassium can overload the kidneys, leading to hyperkalemia, which can be life-threatening.

If you have kidney problems, pay attention not only to bananas in your diet but also to other potassium-rich foods, such as potatoes, tomato purees, avocados, and legumes. Kidney overload caused by excess potassium can manifest as heart arrhythmias or muscle weakness.

Additionally, people suffering from migraines should stick to the recommended 2-3 bananas a day. The tyramine in the fruit can exacerbate headaches.

Notice side effects? Consult a doctor

Individuals taking medications for hypertension or other conditions, such as ACE inhibitors, beta-blockers, or diuretics, which affect potassium levels in the body, might be more susceptible to the side effects of excessive banana consumption than healthy individuals. If you notice alarming symptoms, promptly consult your GP.
