Black ice chaos: 53‑car pile-up amid South Korea snowstorm

In South Korea, a pile-up involving 53 cars occurred due to black ice following heavy snowfall. Eleven people sustained injuries.

On Wednesday, South Korea experienced heavy snowfall that paralysed the country. As much as 19 inches of snow fell in Yongin, near Seoul.

The portal "The Korea Herald" reported a pile-up at the highway exit near Wonju, where 53 cars collided, resulting in 11 injuries. The police are investigating the causes of the accident, identifying black ice as the primary factor.

Analysis of surveillance footage revealed the road was slicked with black ice. The snowfall disrupted traffic on the motorways and in Seoul, where 18 routes were blocked. The city authorities increased the number of metro services.

Significant disruptions in the Seoul region

Due to the snowstorm, more than 150 flights and 100 ferry services were cancelled or rescheduled. The Ministry of Interior and Safety announced that over 130 homes in Seoul lost power.

Power issues also affected other cities within the capital's metropolitan area. The heavy snowfall significantly impacted the daily lives of residents in South Korea.
