Key information
- 73% of Canadians consider Donald Trump the greatest threat to their country.
- Only 6% of respondents identified Vladimir Putin as the greatest threat.
- The upcoming elections in Canada could be crucial for relations with the USA.
According to the latest DailyMail.com/J.L. Partners survey, as many as 73% of Canadians see Donald Trump as the greatest threat to their country. Among these people, 61% are supporters of the Conservative Party, 81% of the Liberal Party, and 82% of the New Democratic Party.
In the survey, only 9% of Canadians named Chinese President Xi Jinping as a threat, and only 6% regarded Vladimir Putin as the greatest threat. This illustrates the significant concern Trump's policies create among the USA's northern neighbours.
Since returning to the presidency, Donald Trump has frequently criticised Canada, even suggesting it should become the 51st state of the USA. Additionally, his decisions to impose tariffs on Canadian goods have sparked dissatisfaction among Canadians.
The upcoming elections in Canada, scheduled for 28 April 2025, could be crucial for future relations with the USA. Currently, Liberal Party leader Mark Carney holds a slight lead over Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre.
Trump's harsh words about Canada
Trump claimed that the U.S. bears significant financial burdens because of its close ties with Canada. He asserted that the country spends $200 billion annually on subsidies related to its northern neighbour. While expressing affection for Canada and its people—mentioning his admiration for hockey legend Wayne Gretzky—he quickly pivoted back to discussing economic matters.
He stressed that the U.S. has no real need for Canadian automobiles, energy, or timber, and that trade with Canada continues only as a gesture of goodwill. He remarked that while the intention is to be supportive, such an arrangement is unsustainable in the long term. According to him, the priority must be to focus on the interests of the United States.
