Potato dumplings are a traditional Eastern European dish that has graced the tables for many years. Their popularity stems from the simplicity of preparation and the flexibility to customise the filling to your own preferences. See how to make potato dumplings step by step.

Ingredients for potato dumplings

To prepare potato dumplings, you need a few basic ingredients. The most important are potatoes – it's best to choose starchy varieties, which contain a lot of starch.

List of ingredients needed for potato dumplings:

  • 1 kg of potatoes
  • 300 g of ground meat
  • 130 g of wheat flour
  • 15 g of potato starch
  • 3 eggs
  • 1 onion
  • Salt and pepper to taste

How to make dumplings?

The first step is to make the potato dough. Raw potatoes (approximately 700 g) should be grated and thoroughly squeezed to remove excess water, leaving the starch behind. The remaining potatoes should be cooked, then mashed after cooling, and combined with the raw ones and starch to form a uniform mass.

How to make the filling? The filling for the dumplings can be prepared from ground meat, onions, and spices. Season the meat with salt, pepper, and marjoram, then mix with sautéed onion.

From the prepared potato dough, form balls and stuff them with the meat filling. Then cook them in salted water for about 15 minutes, until they float to the surface.

Besides the traditional meat filling, you can also prepare a version with cabbage and mushrooms. Necessary ingredients are sauerkraut, dried mushrooms, onion, salt, and pepper. Cook the cabbage and mushrooms until soft, then chop them. Sauté the onion, add the cabbage and mushrooms, and season with salt and pepper. Stuff the dumplings with the prepared filling and then cook them in salted water.

What to serve with potato dumplings?

Potato dumplings taste best warm, served with toppings like onion and bacon. They can also be served with mushroom or sour cream sauce, which gives them a unique character.
