Italy's Meloni seeks breakthrough in Trump tariff talks
The Polish Foreign Minister, Radosław Sikorski, stated on Thursday that he "supports" the Italian Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni, and hopes she will manage to persuade US President Donald Trump regarding both the removal of tariffs and matters concerning Ukraine. He remarked that Meloni adopts a "responsible and ethical stance" on these issues.
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni will meet with US President Donald Trump in Washington on Thursday. She will be the first leader of an EU country to visit him since he announced tariffs on products from the Union. These tariffs were subsequently suspended for 90 days.
The Italian Prime Minister, along with the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, opposes the imposition of tariffs by the United States, considering them detrimental to the economies on both sides of the Atlantic.
Like Brussels, Rome is hopeful that Washington will respond favourably to the European Commission's proposal of reciprocal zero tariff rates on industrial products.
Sikorski supports
On Thursday in Wrocław, journalists questioned the Polish Foreign Minister, who was participating in the East x West Forum conference, for his comments on this visit.
"Of course, we support Prime Minister Meloni. She takes a responsible and ethical stance when it comes to Russian aggression against Ukraine. I also hope that she convinces President Trump on this issue and regarding tariffs," Sikorski said.
The government in Rome hopes to resolve the US-EU conflict with a zero-tariff approach. However, observers warn that recent statements from the US President do not suggest he is inclined to accept this proposal.
