The operation to deploy 10,000 soldiers and gendarmes at the border with the USA started in earnest. The goal is to tackle fentanyl smuggling and illegal migration. Mexico's President, Claudia Sheinbaum, announced this on Tuesday, emphasising that these actions are part of an agreement with the administration of U.S. President Donald Trump.

As part of this agreement, the USA has suspended the implementation of 25% tariffs on Mexican goods for a month.

Sheinbaum announced at a press conference that the deployment had already begun, emphasizing that the movement of forces would strengthen efforts to combat crime along the northern border.

Mexican media report that on Tuesday morning, 990 National Guard officers were transported by plane from the south to the north of the country. More than 3,700 gendarmes are expected to reach the border towns by land, and 900 soldiers from Mexico City have been directed north.

Trump announced the imposition of tariffs, justifying it with the illegal influx of migrants and fentanyl, which is associated with many deaths in the USA. On Monday, both parties announced a one-month suspension of tariffs to allow negotiations involving U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and the heads of the Treasury and Commerce Departments.
