Mogán is a charming fishing village on Gran Canaria that has, over time, transformed into one of the island's most picturesque tourist resorts thanks to its beautiful location.

Tax introduced and abolished

The Mogán authorities proposed introducing a tourist tax of €0.15 (£0.13) per person per day, applicable to those staying in hotels, holiday homes, and other tourist accommodations. Mogán City Council announced that the tax revenue would be exclusively used to finance activities, services, or infrastructure in the popular tourist area and to promote tourism in the municipality.

However, the tax was met with resistance and was overturned the next day. The court in Mogán rejected the new fee, labelling it as "an inappropriate and disproportionate burden."

According to Canarian Weekly, Judge Francisco José Gómez de Lorenzo-Cáceres stated that the tourist tax should be regulated by formal law. Nevertheless, the Mogán authorities plan to appeal this decision.

The future of tourism in the Canary Islands

The tax aimed to help manage the growing number of tourists, but its rejection raises questions about the future of such initiatives. The Mogán authorities emphasise that they are not turning away from tourism but want to ensure its high quality.

Despite the court's decision, Mogán City Council does not intend to concede and plans to file an appeal. "Independent" confirms that the authorities will fight for the introduction of the tax, believing it is necessary for the sustainable development of tourism in the region.
