Russia under fire: Lavrov's claims clash with Kyiv realities
Sergey Lavrov insists, contrary to the facts, that Putin's army is attacking "only military targets or facilities used by the military." When a CBS News journalist pointed out that the recent attack on Kyiv did not seem to align with this statement, Lavrov reacted nervously.
Many of the reports shared by Russian media and government representatives are likely not true. Such reports may be part of an information war conducted by the Russian Federation.
During the night from Wednesday to Thursday, the Russians carried out a massive and coordinated attack on Ukraine. In Kyiv alone, 12 people were killed, and approximately 90 were injured.
CBS News journalist Margaret Brennan asked Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov why Russians are killing civilians when Ukraine has declared readiness for a ceasefire.
In response, Lavrov falsely claimed that the Russian army attacks "only military targets or facilities used by the military."
"President Putin has stated this on numerous occasions, and this time it hasn’t changed. We never deliberately attack civilian targets, unlike the Zelensky regime," Lavrov declared irresponsibly.
Brennan responded that the attack on civilian targets in Kyiv seemed "deliberate." Lavrov reiterated that the Russians "have the right to attack targets used by the Ukrainian army."
"You're not listening to me." Lavrov irritated by journalist's question
The journalist pressed further, asking if these words should be interpreted as a rejection of Donald Trump's plea, who on Thursday urged Putin to stop the attacks. "Will Russia continue to attack Kyiv despite President Trump's words: 'Vladimir, stop?'" Brennan asked Lavrov.
"You’re not listening to me. We will continue to target the sites used by the military of Ukraine, by some mercenaries from foreign countries and by instructors whom the Europeans officially sent to help target Russian civilian sites," the head of Russian diplomacy continued to insist.
