Russian attack on Kyiv hydropower plant raises safety concerns
On Monday, 26 August, one of the targets of the Russian attack was the Kyiv hydropower plant (HPP) located near Vyshhorod. In the recordings that have reached social media, you can see fire and a lot of smoke. At this time, it is unknown if there are any fatalities.
As emphasised by Ukrainian media, currently, energy engineers across the country are determining how the attack by the Armed Forces of Russia has impacted the energy system and specific energy facilities in Ukraine.
At this time, it is unknown whether there were any injuries or fatalities at the facility. It is known that infrastructure facilities in the Kyiv region were generally damaged, and one person was injured, but it has not been specified exactly where this took place.
According to data from September 2021, the power of the Kyiv hydropower plant is 440 MW. The Kyiv reservoir regulates climatic phenomena such as spring floods or droughts.
The station consists of a hydropower plant building, dams, earth embankments, and a concrete spillway dam connected to the station building. The protective structures are 69 kilometres long, and the maximum height of the dam is 22 metres.
Russians attack Ukraine and aim to flood Kyiv
On Monday, Ukraine came under heavy fire from Russia. From the early morning hours, Russian missiles attacked at least ten regions in the country. The most significant strikes occurred in the Lviv, Lutsk, and Kyiv regions, where people hid in the metro.
The night preceding these events was also not peaceful. Ukrainian air forces reported multiple times about groups of Shahed drones heading towards Ukraine. Kyiv's air defence managed to shoot down several drones over the capital's suburbs, likely preventing more severe damage to the city.
The Mayor of Lutsk, Ihor Polishchuk, reported that one person was killed in the attack, and emergency services were working on-site.
