South Korea's political turmoil: New warrant for Yoon's arrest
The court in Seoul has issued another arrest warrant for the President of South Korea, Yoon Suk Yeol, who is accused of staging a coup. Previous attempts to detain the politician were unsuccessful.
The office investigating corruption among high-ranking officials (CIO) announced that a renewed arrest warrant for the suspect was issued earlier this afternoon (local time).
It was not disclosed how long the warrant would remain valid. The court issued the first warrant on 31st December but attempts to detain Yoon on 3rd January failed. Presidential security prevented investigators from entering the politician's residence, citing a legal debate surrounding the warrant.
The CIO sought assistance from Acting President Choi Sang Mok and the police but did not receive support before the warrant expired. Yoon's defenders tried to nullify the arrest and search warrant for the residence, but the court in Seoul rejected their request.
Further actions and the president's hiding
The CIO and police committed to taking more decisive action to arrest Yoon. However, the situation is complicated as the politician has been hiding in his residence since 12th December. Last weekend, presidential security installed barbed wire near the gate and hills near the residence.
