Trump administration considers ending all military aid to Ukraine
The administration of President Donald Trump is considering cancelling all U.S. aid to Ukraine, including the recently approved deliveries of military equipment and ammunition, according to the "New York Times." Following unsuccessful negotiations at the White House, an administration spokesperson stated that support for Ukraine will remain solely a European responsibility.
The U.S. administration may terminate all military aid to Ukraine, including army financing, sharing intelligence data, and training soldiers, as reported by the "New York Times." This possibility was suggested by an official from President Donald Trump's administration after Friday's meetings between the U.S. President and Volodymyr Zelensky at the White House fell through.
According to Pentagon estimates, there is still approximately €3.7 billion left in the U.S. budget for military assistance to Ukraine. The last equipment deliveries, which were approved during Joe Biden's presidency, are to be completed within the next six months. Afterwards, the responsibility of supporting the Ukrainian army will rest solely on European countries and other allies.
This is how much the United States has provided
Since the beginning of the Russian invasion in February 2022, the Pentagon has provided Ukraine with weapons and ammunition valued at €32.6 billion over 71 deliveries from the Department of Defense stocks.
Under the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative (USAI) programme, Kyiv received an additional €32 billion to purchase new equipment directly from American companies. As highlighted by the "NYT," the last instalment of this programme was approved on 30 December 2024, and since January – under Trump's administration – no new military aid for Ukraine has been announced.
According to reports from the American newspaper, the Trump administration may take further steps that would mean a complete withdrawal of support for Ukraine. This could include not only cancelling future weapons deliveries but also ending intelligence cooperation, the training of Ukrainian soldiers, and closing the international aid coordination centre at the U.S. military base in Germany.
According to the Kiel Institute for the World Economy, European countries have so far allocated €133 billion to support Ukraine, while the USA has provided €114.7 billion for military and humanitarian aid. The "NYT" assesses that the potential withdrawal of support by the USA would be a "shocking abandonment of a partner country" and could mark the end of American backing for Ukraine.
