Trump administration to revoke legal status for 500,000 immigrants
The Donald Trump administration plans to revoke the temporary legal status for over 500,000 immigrants, which could lead to mass deportations.
What do you need to know?
- When will the decision be published? The formal publication of the decision to revoke legal status is set to occur on 25 March in the Federal Register.
- Who is affected by the revocation of status? The decision affects over 500,000 immigrants who entered the U.S. legally under President Joe Biden's policy.
- What are the consequences? Individuals without other rights to remain in the U.S. will have to leave the country or face deportation by the end of April.
As reported by Bloomberg, according to the Department of Homeland Security, approximately 532,000 people entered the U.S. under the programme of previous administrations.
What about the CNHV programme?
Washington is also discontinuing the conditional waivers programme for immigrants, known as CNHV, launched by President Biden in 2023. The programme allowed foreigners, who met certain conditions, to obtain special residency status. The termination of CNHV is seen as an escalation of immigration crackdowns by the Trump administration.
What are the reactions to the decision?
The Bloomberg agency reminds that since Donald Trump assumed office, federal agents have made over 30,000 arrests of individuals living in the U.S. illegally. Although officials claim that law enforcement targets serious offenders, some individuals were arrested solely for lacking legal immigration status.
The administration has not disclosed how many people have been deported on this basis.
The decision to revoke temporary legal status for immigrants and the termination of the CNHV programme has sparked controversy and concerns about the future of thousands of people who may be forced to leave the U.S.
