Trump steps in as Musk and Rubio clash over government cuts
During Donald Trump's cabinet meeting, Marco Rubio and Elon Musk exchanged heated words, prompting the US President to intervene.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Elon Musk clashed during Thursday's cabinet meeting with Donald Trump. As reported by the "New York Times", Rubio was furious with Musk, who accused him of failing to reduce staff in federal agencies. President Trump observed the situation passively for an extended period before deciding to step in.
The exchange centred on staff reductions in government agencies, a measure Musk supports. The President convened the meeting after a series of decisions on mass layoffs, which had sparked criticism. Musk, at the helm of the Department of State Efficiency, argued that federal agencies make decisions regarding layoffs.
Rubio strongly reacted to Musk's accusations, dismissing them as untrue. He also questioned the fate of over 1,500 State Department officials who had taken early retirement with severance. In response, Musk countered by suggesting that while Rubio performs well on television, his other abilities are lacking.
Donald Trump's intervention
President Trump finally intervened to defend Rubio. Trump noted that he has a packed schedule, frequently traveling, making television appearances, and overseeing an agency. Therefore, he emphasized the importance of everyone working together. He stressed that Musk can offer advice on employment reductions but does not have the authority to make decisions.
The meeting at the White House could mark a turning point in Trump's second term. Republican concerns about Musk's influence on federal agencies have prompted the President to curtail his actions.
Numerous lawsuits related to Musk's role are currently before the courts, with the Trump administration maintaining that he does not possess decision-making power.
