What do you need to know?

  • U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance emphasised that Russia and Ukraine must make a territorial exchange to reach a peace agreement.
  • The demarcation lines of Russian and Ukrainian forces should be close to the current front lines, meaning both sides need to cede some territories.
  • The U.S. proposed a clear peace plan, warning that if it is rejected, they will withdraw from the mediation process.

What are the U.S. proposals for Russia and Ukraine?

U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance, during a visit to India, pointed out that Russia and Ukraine must agree on a territorial exchange to end the conflict. "There's going to have to be some territorial swaps," said Vance, quoted by Bloomberg.

According to Vance, the demarcation lines of Russian and Ukrainian forces should be "somewhere close" from the current lines of the front. This would mean that both Moscow and Kyiv would have to agree to relinquish some of the territories they currently control, he added.

What does freezing the conflict mean for Ukraine?

Freezing the conflict along the current front line would be a significant concession for Ukraine, which aims to regain all lost territory in the east and south of the country. "Since as soon as we start talking about Crimea, about our sovereign territories, etc., we enter the format that Russia wants, which is prolonging the war," warned Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

What are the consequences for the USA?

The head of American diplomacy, Marco Rubio, informed the NATO Secretary-General that if a clear path to peace does not emerge, the USA will withdraw from the mediation. "We will withdraw from mediating between Russia and Ukraine if we do not receive a positive response," emphasised Vance. This stance of the USA is crucial for the further course of negotiations between Russia and Ukraine.
