Ukrainian offensive in Kursk prompts cautious US response
The Ukrainians are conducting an attack in the Kursk region. The Americans are refraining from commenting on the situation for now. "We are trying to better understand what they are doing, what their goals are, and what their strategy is," said the spokesman for the National Security Council, John Kirby, at a press conference.
Since 6 August, Ukraine has been conducting an operation in the Russian Kursk region. Dozens of villages have been taken, and fighting is ongoing in the Sudzha area. Russia had to evacuate 76,000 residents.
The spokesman for the American National Security Council, John Kirby, was asked about the operation.
"We are in contact with our Ukrainian counterparts and are trying to better understand what they are doing, what their goals are, and what their strategy is," he said.
He emphasized that he would be able to provide more information after discussions when the Americans have a better understanding of what the Ukrainians are planning.
"No changes in our policy"
Kirby was also asked about the use of American weapons. There are recordings that suggest the use of HIMARS in the Kursk region.
"There are no changes in our policy regarding American weapons and their use," he said. He reminded that Ukraine can use weapons for border attacks.
Kirby added that the USA will provide Ukraine with Stinger missiles and ammunition worth £103 million. This is another tranche of the aid package approved by Congress in April 2024.
