Zelensky and Vance: Diplomatic thaw at Pope's inauguration
Volodymyr Zelensky and J.D. Vance are not fond of each other following a meeting that took place in February 2025 at the White House. The President of Ukraine and the Vice President of the USA met during the inauguration of Pope Leo XIV. Both politicians decided to exchange a friendly gesture, all captured by cameras.
The inauguration of Pope Leo XIV is the most significant international event of the day. Over 150,000 people attended the pope's inaugural ceremonies. Among them were many heads of state and important politicians. Representatives from the United States and Ukraine were also present.
Volodymyr Zelensky and J.D. Vance appeared in Rome. Both politicians have not been fond of each other following a meeting that took place in February 2025. They had an argument in front of the cameras back then.
Zelensky tried to convince the Vice President of the USA that Ukraine is the sole victim of the ongoing war with Russia. Meanwhile, Vance criticised the Ukrainian politician for what he saw as a lack of willingness to negotiate with the Russians.
Today (18th May), a meeting took place between both politicians. Their greeting gave the impression that neither held any grudges against the other. Vance and Zelensky warmly shook hands. Pictures and videos published online show that the world leaders even exchanged smiles.
The warming of relations between Vance and Zelensky may result from Donald Trump's recent policy change towards Russia. The President of the USA increasingly emphasises his impatience with Vladimir Putin and his avoidance of concrete peace talks and a ceasefire.
