Zelensky cuts short Africa trip amid deadly Kyiv attacks

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced on Thursday that he is cutting short his visit to South Africa. He is returning to Ukraine due to the large-scale Russian attack on Kyiv, during which at least nine people were killed and over 70 were injured last night.

What are Zelensky's plans after returning to Ukraine?

President Volodymyr Zelensky stated on his Telegram profile that after meeting with South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, he will immediately return to Ukraine. Zelensky emphasised that the situation requires heightened global diplomatic efforts.

"Today, I will brief President Ramaphosa of South Africa, who currently holds the G20 Presidency, on the situation and our need to intensify global diplomatic efforts. The strikes must be stopped immediately and unconditionally," Zelensky wrote on Telegram.

How is Ukraine responding to the attack?

In response to the attacks, President Zelensky instructed Ukraine's Defence Minister, Rustem Umierov, to immediately contact partners regarding the strengthening of air defences. Zelensky noted the importance of the world understanding what is happening in Ukraine.

"Unfortunately, there is significant destruction. Rescue operations are ongoing, and the rubble of residential buildings is being cleared. As of this moment, over 80 people have been injured across Ukraine. Everyone is receiving the necessary assistance. Regrettably, 9 people have been killed in Kyiv. My condolences go out to their families and loved ones," the president conveyed.

What are Ukraine's further diplomatic steps?

Ukraine's Deputy Foreign Minister, Andrij Sybiha, will join all necessary meetings in South Africa to brief that country's leaders on the situation in Ukraine.

Ukraine is counting on South Africa's assistance with humanitarian issues, including the return of Ukrainian prisoners and children abducted by Russia.
