Devastating strike on Kyiv: Nine dead, rescue efforts ongoing
In a devastating attack on Kyiv, nine people have died, and 63 have been injured, reports the local authorities. At least five districts of the city were shelled, and rescuers are still extracting people from the debris.
"On the night of 23rd April, Kyiv came under attack. As of 05:06 GMT, nine fatalities and 63 injuries have been reported - including six children and a pregnant woman," stated the head of the State Control Office of Kyiv City, Timur Tkachenko. Forty-two people have been admitted to the hospital.
According to the mayor of Kyiv, the Svyatoshynsky district was the most severely affected by the attack. Fires broke out in six locations. Emergency services are still working on-site. Rescuers are continuing to pull people from the rubble, reported Vitali Klitschko.
Civilian infrastructure was destroyed in the attack. Garages, houses, and cars were damaged in the fires.
The Minister of Internal Affairs of Ukraine stated that the rescue operation is still ongoing. "We can hear telephones ringing beneath the ruins - search efforts will continue until we are certain that everyone has been rescued," he added.
Ukrainian attack on Crimea
Russian Telegram channels have also reported on an attack on occupied Crimea. One of the more popular channels published a map showing drones flying over the peninsula.
Just before midnight Polish time, the Russians closed traffic on the Crimean Bridge.
After about an hour, traffic on the crossing connecting Crimea with Russia was restored.
